Hi all,
I have been unable to find a reference that compares the various types
of rigs and explains how they work upwind. I have always assumed that
the bermudian rig was the best upwind, but I ran across an article
that mentioned, in passing, that a lateen rig can have even better
upwind performance than a bermudian, due to the fact that it often has
a better aspect ratio.
This lead me to look around at other rigs, and each one has web pages
that say it is the best thing since sliced bread, but none of them
seem to back up their opinions with any kind of numbers.
I am particularly curious because of the weight aloft issed brought up
in another thread. If the harryproas are actually less sensitive to
weight aloft, does that expand the rig choices that we should
consider. Also, In the numbers that Rick has give me on the various
polar diagrams, it would seem that it is possible that a harry will go
fast enough to make the apparent wind move forward of the beam much of
the time, so upwind performance is particularly important.
So, any references out there I should look at, or am I just stuck with
the boring old bermudian rig if I want to go upwind?
