Back up plan would be to glue it in the extended position.

Can the mast be lowered while the sail is powered up under load, when it would be most needed to lower it ?  What would the procedure be. 
 
Do you have a back up mast or plan for one if the extendable mast should prove not to be practical ? (not that it would be) or would you have to start from scratch ?
